A curious tea house

Yesterday, my friend Tom and I were going out for my birthday to eat some fondue savoyarde near place Monge (it's just a few street away from le Jardin des Plantes). Moufftard street is quite a toursit-trap but its lovely, I really enjoyed it. The fondue was pretty good by the way, but the wine was awfully expensive, even tought it was a really simple one.
After this heavy lunch we decided to take a little stroll in the neibourghood, and we stumbled across what looked like a traditionnal (and a bit of high-end) chinese restaurant, which was in fact a tea house. Craving for a tea, I decided to give it a try. I have to admit, I love western tea (Damman is my favourite brand at the moment, but each tea house has it's own special blend that I love) but I'm the most unaware when it comes to asian tea. I've tasted a few japanese ones thanks to my friends, and my uncle who works in China gifted me some mandarin flavoured tea (a very curious thing, tea is kept in a dried mandarin so it keep gaining in flavour as it age), but here is all my knowledge.

So we rung at the door, and a classy waiter came and opened it. They were three behind the counter, and the place was empty of guest. They were sporting an elegant uniform with black pants and a red mao collared chinese style shirt (it was textured silk I guess). On the shop side was a gigantic wall litteraly covered in chinese tea boxes, all were products of the house. We took place in the tea saloon part, which was furnished with antic chinese furniture, on the wall there was a chinese poem about tea (the waiter offered to show us the translation later), then they ended us the menu. It was entirely made of tea, not a single pastry , and surprise : none of them were blended or flavoured. It was tea and only tea, nothing more than that. Tom and I were totaly lost in this strange menu, but hopefully the waiter was really knowlegeable about tea tasting. He helped us choosing tea for our own taste. Tom, who isn't really fond of tea and doesn't really have a loved type had a really strange tea, which started at first with passion fruit flavor, then turned in a more vegetable-like  taste, with cumcuber tone. I had myself a very strong tea with a coffee flavor at first that swiflty switched to someting  with cereal tone. I should say it again : none of these tea were flavoured in any artificial kind of way, these flavours came from the way and time of drying it !

 We discovered the chinese way of  tea tasting, which is very different from the western way. Tea is always soaked in boiling water, , they use two tea pots  and two cups, and it bear a least 5 infusions ! I need to try and taste more chinese tea (I'll try to take some photos of my parent's traditionnal china bones porcelain tea set , they really never use it)
 I was really pleased by this experience, for that my tea was delicious, the staff was perfectly nice and knowlegeable,  the place was truly stunning.
I was really happy to find this place for my birthday, and I had a really nice day in great part thanks to it !

Welcome in Paris, Japan !

So it's been a month or so I'm living in Paris now, and that's pretty awsome. I had the luck to go to the Harajuku Fashion Walk organized by Junnyan and Mocco, going to the TCK too and to the opening of Anecdote Axes Femmes in Paris. Yeah, don't forget I'm here for my studies x)
I live in chinatown, so I can shop easily for asian food (so many vietnamese restaurants *^*) and practice some myself (I've done Phö, new year dumpling and a few other things so far).
So I sort of live in asia, between my japanese language studies, my flat in chinatown and all those trips I do to japantown to buy magazines, books and okashi. I've seen so many asian people in this town, litteraly everywere you go you heard some japanese or chinese, not only in super-touristic places.

Ca fait environ un mois que j'habite à Paris, et c'est assez génial. J'ai eu la chance de pouvoir assister à l'Harajuku fashion wal de Junnyan et Mocco, de faire le TCK et d'aller à Anecdote Axes Femme le jour de l'ouverture. Oui, je suis censée être là pour mes études x)
J'habite dans le quartier chinois, donc je peux manger asiatique tout le temps (tellement de bons restaurants vietnamiens *^*) et m'entrainer à cuisiner aussi (j'ai fais du phô, des raviolis chinois et ce genre de choses pour le moment).
Donc en fait je vis plus ou moins en asie entre mes cours de japonais, mon logement à chinatown et tous ces aller-retour que je fais dans le quartier japonais pour m'acheter des magazines, des luvres et des okashi. Il y a tellement d'asiatiques partout, littéralement, qu'on entend sans arrêt au moins du japonais et du chinois même dans des lieux moins touristiques.

Boyfriend's yummy katsudon, miso soup, cabbage salad and a very appropriate can of Coke.

My super good okonomyaki (2nd favorite japanese food just after takoyaki <3) with miso soup. I had it with pork, and the flaked fish was moving, it was really funny.

Mon délicieux okonomyaki (deuxième plat japonais préféré après les takoyaki <3) avec la soupe miso. Je l'ai prise au porc, et j'adore les flocons de bonite séchée dessus, on dirait qu'ils dansent !

I highly recommend Aki restaurant if you want to enjoy some traditonnal popular Japan food. They cook okonomyakis in traditionnal style, it's clearly one of the best thing I've ever tasted ! And it is really reasonnable price wise (~12€ for an enormous okonomyaki with salada and miso)

Je recommande vraiment le restaurant Aki si vous voulez gouter à de la nourriture populaire japonaise. Ils font cuire les okonomyaki de manière traditionnelle (sur une sorte de plancha), et c'est sans aucun doute les meilleurs que j'ai mangé jusqu'ici ! En plus ce n'est pas très cher (~12€ pour un menu okonomyaki+miso+salade)

And a the TCK I discovered a shop based in Paris that sell modern printed yukata and rent traditionnal kimono. They had a bunny head yukata but I forgot to take a photo x.x

Au TCK j'ai découvert une boutique parisienne qui vend des yukata modernisés et loue des kimono tradtionnels. Ils avaient un yukata à têtes de lapins mais j'ai totalement oublié de le prendre en photo x.x

So apparently, Paris is in a sort of time and space warp between France and Japan because I swear I've never heard so much japanese in all my life. Well, at least I can practice a bit.

Donc apparement Paris est dans une espèce de faille spacio-temporelle entre la France et le Japon parce que je vous jure que je n'ai jamais autant entendu parlé japonais de ma vie. Bon, au moins je peux pratiquer un peu du coup.

Combining other fashions with Lolita

Mélanger d'autres styles avec le lolita

I don't often mix other fashions with lolita, even tought I tend to use girly gyaru clothing or inspiration in my lolita. I sometimes make my more intricated outfit based on other fashions tought.

Je ne mélange pas souvent d'autres styles avec du lolita, même si j'ai tendance à utilise des éléments ou des inspi girly gyaru. Mais il m'arrive parfois de mélanger différentes tendances quand je veux faire une tenue un peu plus complexe.

A little bit mori inspired with the shale and the many lace details. I tried to make it really natural-toned (my shoes stand out a little bit).

Un peu inspirée du mori avec ce châle et tous ces détails en dentelle. J'ai essayé de rester sur un schéma de couleur très naturel (même si mes chaussures n'étaient pas vraiment d'accord)

 

With my (pretty awsome) pirate friends Valtameri and Tzadkiel, as a punk lolita. I used a tartan OP, leather belt/shoes/bag and a perfecto to tie a punk inspired coordinate. I wanted a coord to fit my beloved Thierry Mugler chained bag into lolita !

Avec mes (très classes) amies pirates Valtameri et Tzadkiel, en punk lolita. J'ai utilisé du tartan, du (faux) cuir et une coupe perfecto pour symboliser des éléments punk. J'ai créé cette coordi autour de mon sac, un Thierry Mugler en faux cuir avec des chaînes.

 

 With the beautiful Marie. My challenge was to mix Harajuku "kawaii" fashion with lolita (I don't own sweet), so I used modern clothes (satin bag, fake leather snickers and woolen perfecto) with an otherwise traditionnal lolita coord to make it a little bit more "pop".

Avec la magnifique Marie. Mon idée était de mixer le côté très "kawaii' Harajuku avec du lolita (je ne possède pas de sweet), j'ai donc utilisé des vêtements "modernes" (sac, baskets, perfecto en laine) avec une tenue autrement assez traditionnelle pour lui donner un côté un peu plus "pop".

3 modes que j'aimerais revoir sur le devant de la scène

Shiro/kuro, mizuiro/pinkuiro/akairo, blackXwhite :

I love color X white and uni color scheme. I think they are quite difficult to work with because they tend to focus more on layering different kind of fabrics and looking on small details like lace etc, they really don't fit the print trend, neither the ott one. They really tend to look like plain and simple coord, but they can really be intricated. They usually have an old school sweet basis, and I love old school sweet.

Shiro/kuro, mizuiro/pinkuiro/akairo, blackXwhite :

J'aime les combo couleurXblanc ou uni color. C'est à mon avis un peu plus difficile à faire puisque qu'on se focalise principalement sur les superpositions de différents types de tissus pour donner du relief, ainsi que sur les petits détails comme la dentelle ou la broderie. Ce n'est vraiment pas quelquechose qui s'accorde avec les print ni même avec l'ott à mon avis. Ces tenues ont souvent l'air très simples mais je pense qu'elles sont assez complexes à partir du moment où on y réfléchi un peu. En général, elles ont une base sweet old school, et j'adore le sweet old school.

My grandmother tapestry in your face :

I looooove tapestry/gobelin old school dresses, but they are totally out of fashion, even tought Meta keep releasing some. These dresses give a very antique doll feel, and that's how I love my lolita. So much lace and roses !

 J'adooooore les imprimés tapisserie/gobelin, mais c'est totalement passé de mode, même si Méta continue à en sortir. Elles font vraiment poupée de porcelaine, et c'est ça que j'aime dans le lolita. Tellement de dentelle et de roses !!

Chunky platfroms and RHS :

I guess that RHS are now a basic, but a lot of modern lolita don't like them. I think RHS tend to fit a lot of lolita style (old school, sweet, gothic, punk, pirate and even classic if done well), plus they ar fun to walk with. Big platform are not trendy anymore, altought we can still find them in GL/EGL outfits. I loved the rare look of these bizarre shoes. They tend to fit better with darker style now, but I like wearing them with old school sweet.

Grosses platformes et RHS :

A mon avis les RHS sont maintenant devenues un basique, mais beaucoup de jeunes lolitas ne les apprécient pas du tout. Je trouve qu'elles vont vraiment avec tout (old school, sweet, gothic, punk, pirate et même classic dans la bonne coordi), et l'effet de balancier est super drôle. Les grosses chaussures platforme ne sont plus du tout à la mode, mais on continue à en voir de temps en temps dans des tenues GL/EGL. J'adore le côté très décalé de ces chaussures. En général, elles vont mieux avec les styles un peu plus gothic mais personnellement je les adore pour tout ce qui est old school.

How I first found out about Lolita

Comment j'ai découvert le lolita

As I said before, I discovered lolita fashion trought Mana and Malice Mizer. I used to be a metal head
back in Junior High and found out about visual with Dir en Grey and the Gazette. I was into boyish clothing at that time, and when I saw Mana for the first time, it didn't occur to me it could be a man (well, I was 11 or 12 yo at that time). I wanted to be more feminine, but definitly not into mainstream style because I had a lot of issue trying to fit into the mold and getting constantly rejected and bullied. Here also began my love for Japan and my years of weebness, but that's not our story right now.
 So I did some research about japanese lolita, and I had the feeling I could be almost *cute* wearing that, especially because they all had frizzy hair just like mine and were petite with a chubby face.
I had a (really short) ~*kawaii misa-chan ne ?! nyan!*~ period because well, I was young, then started to wear lolita inspired clothing (fortunatly I was too young to figure how to buy things on the internet, or it would have been cringe-worthy). I bought my first second-hand brand dress during my last year in Junior High, then definitly became lolita when I started High School. I improved a lot during my three years of High school and now I wear lolita on a daily basis. I still to this day learn a lot of things about lolita fashion and it's culture and history, but I would say that I feel at my true place in the lolita community.

So I could say that I discovered lolita trought music, and it's not really surprising given that I think each style have an heavily related music genre bound with. I still love Mana to this day, and my favourite band ever is, of course, Malice Mizer.

Comme je l'ai déjà dit dans un article précédent, j'ai découvert le lolita par Mana et Malice Mizer. J'étais assez "métalleuse" au collège et en cherchant de nouveaux sons je suis tombée sur du visual, Dir en Grey et the Gazette entre autres. J'étais assez garçon manqué, et quand j'ai vu Mana pour la première ça ne m'est pas venu à l'idée une seule instant qu'il pouvait être un homme (bon, on me pardonne, j'avais 11-12 ans à l'époque). Je voulais être plus féminine mais sans chercher à être à la mode, j'avais déjà essayé avant et ça ne m'avais apporté que des ennuis. C'est aussi le départ de mon amour pour le Japon et de mon côté un peu kikoo (12 ans quoi), mais là n'est pas le sujet.
Donc j'ai fais quelques recherches sur les lolitas japonaises, et j'avais vraiment cette impression que c'était un style qui pourrait m'aller, à cause entre autres de leurs cheveux frisés comme les miens et de leur petite taille.
J'ai eu une (assez courte) période ~*kawaii misa-chan ne ?! nyan!*~ parce que bon, j'étais jeune, puis j'ai commencé à m'inspirer de vrais vêtements lolitas pour m'habiller tous les jours (fort heureusement, j'étais bien trop jeune pour essayer de commander seule sur internet). J'ai achetée ma première robe d'occasion en 3ème, puis je suis vraiment devenue lolita en commençant le lycée. Je pense avoir beaucoup évolué dans mon style durant le lycée, et je porte du lolita tous les jours maintenant. Je continue bien sûr à apprendre beaucoup de choses sur le lolita, sa culture et son histoire mais je me sent assez à ma place ans la communauté maintenant.

Donc on peut dire que j'ai découvert le lolita grâce à la musique, ce qui n'est somme toute pas étonnant car je considère que chaque style possède un style musicale qui lui est propre. Je continue à adorer Mana, et mon groupe préféré est bien sûr Malice Mizer.
